Born in Sabak Bernam, Selangor, in 1952, Kamal Mustafa attended Malay College Kuala Kangsar and Polytechnic of Central London. He graduated in BA Photographic Arts (Film) in 1976. He spent the next three decades as an advertising film director, with numerous awards locally and internationally. He has since retired and pursued art practice full-time since 2007. His artistic practice is mainly produced in digital format, alternating between painting, photography, mixed media, graphic storytelling, videos, and animation. His artworks have been featured in various group exhibitions such as Boundaries Of (Dis)beliefs at Whitebox@MAP Publika, Kuala Lumpur (2017); Looking Ahead at Whiteaways Arcade, Penang both organised by Fergana Art; Take 5, The Rest Is History at RA Fine Arts, Kuala Lumpur (2009); Working Title at Galeri Petronas, Kuala Lumpur (2008); and MCKK Alumni at RA Fine Arts, Kuala Lumpur (2007). His solo exhibitions include Hulutopia at Fergana Art Space, Whiteaways Arcade, Penang (2015); and Simulations at Whitebox@MAP Publika, Kuala Lumpur (2014).
