Niranjan Rajah is a Malaysian artist, theorist, curator, and academic whose practice is deeply informed by his diasporic heritage and global experiences. Born in 1961, he grew up in Kuala Lumpur and later pursued studies in Economics and Law in the United Kingdom, where he also developed his artistic practice. He returned to Malaysia in 1993 with an MA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College, London, and began teaching at UNIMAS in Sarawak.

Now based in Vancouver, Canada, Niranjan is an Assistant Professor at Simon Fraser University’s School of Interactive Arts and Technology. Despite his international journey, he continues to regard Kuala Lumpur as his kampung halaman. His persona as the diasporic “Koboi” explores identity, belonging, and cultural hybridity, engaging with themes that span Southeast Asia and North America. Through his art, he interrogates postcolonial legacies, global investments, and the intersections of Indigenous and migrant histories. His work is a critical and poetic meditation on place and the evolving nature of home.
