Ismail Mat Hussin

(b. Kelantan, 1938 – 2015)

Ismail Mat Hussin’s remarkable talent in illustrating the daily lives of the locals in the East Coast of Malaysia through the batik medium had sought the attention of art enthusiasts. He held his first and only solo exhibition titled Canting at the University of Malaya Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur in 2012. His interest in art was sparked during his time attending weekly art painting classes under Nik Mahmood Idris at Padang Garong Malay School in Kota Bharu from 1954 to 1955. He was known to be a protégé of Khalil Ibrahim in the early years of his career as an artist. He became a full-time artist in 1968 until he started work as a graphic designer with Syarikat Percetakan Dian in Kota Bharu, Kelantan from 1979 to 1991. A talented musician, he was a Grade V violin player, which allowed him to work as a part-time musician with Radio-Televisyen Malaysia in Kota Bharu, Kelantan from 1965 to 1967. He was a member of Angkatan Pelukis Semenanjung (APS) Kelantan Chapter and Persatuan Seni Lukis Kelantan (PESENI).
