Chang Yoong Chia is a contemporary artist whose practice focuses on the importance of material and the method of application and presentation. The repetitive gesture of labour in applying the medium such as postage stamp collages to create painting-like quality in the absence of paint creates a new perspective in viewing his artworks in his series called The World is Flat. Drawing upon historical context with intimate narratives, Chang’s works delves into personal relationships with the external world, conveying them through various expressions such as collage work, embroidery, sculpture, installations, and paintings. Chang held a mid-career survey in an exhibition titled Second Life that showcased 130 artworks created over the span of 20 years at National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur in 2018.
